Introduction
Web-based administration takes advantage of today's internet technology to perform administrative tasks for IBM's Software Servers in a centralized, integrated fashion.
This beta version of the WebExec product allows integration of basic software server administration tasks with proactive system monitoring and management capabilities, allowing your network administrator to more effectively and efficiently manage network operations. Organized as a set of modular functions, this integrated capability provides immediate benefits and future expandibility.
Today's challenge is to improve the effectiveness of managing the multiple elements of your network-including not only equipment, protocols and inventories, but also application software. This package offers an opportunity to meet this challenge.
WebExec does more than provide a basic set of administrative capabilities for software servers. It serves as an integrated administration shell for the individual IBM Software Servers and accommodates the integration of non-IBM software servers as well. WebExec can also seamlessly add Web-accessible applications to the administrative function set to expand the capabilities available to administrators. An illustration of this would be including access to a system management application such as IBM's TME 10 NetFinity, so that administrators can access system management functions along with their software administration functions.
Components
The WebExec product is a client-server implementation using the latest Java
technology. A WebExec Java gateway application resides on each server machine
to be administered. It manages requests from the WebExec client,
which is a Java applet that is executed within a browser's Java virtual machine. The WebExec
server application will use a user-specified port to process requests
from the WebExec client applet. WebExec will initially support the following IBM
Software Servers:
Software Servers
All the IBM Software Servers on Windows NT, IBM OS/2 and AIX platforms will be supported. This will enable you to administer the Software Servers via your company's intranet, using any standard Web browser that supports standard HTML Version 3.0, JavaScript, and Java.

For the NT environment, WebExec requires that the software servers are installed as services. IBM's Internet Connection Server may be started as an application using command line parameters through the properties function.
For the Lotus Domino Server, the HTTP Web server needs to be added to the server tasks in the NOTES.INI file. You can do this by editing the NOTES.INI file as described in the Domino documentation.
WebExec can be downloaded directly from the World Wide Web.
First, register with the WebExec team to receive a user ID and password. Go to the URL "http://booksrv2.raleigh.ibm.com/eagle/" to register.
After registration you may proceed to the download Web page and follow these steps:
The WebExec product must be installed on each server machine that you wish to administer. There is an install wizard included that will guide you through the process.
Insure your classpath has the Java classes.zip file and the current directory(.).
After downloading and unzipping the WebExec product, follow these installation steps below:
The WebExec wizard allows you to customize the administrative functions that you want to make available. WebExec comes with a standard set of functions enabled for your administrative use. Each of these may be disabled through the wizard. In addition, the wizard will allow new functions that are based on access to applications through a URL to also be added to WebExec. This will allow you to add some of your favorite applications. For example, you may want to add a system management application.
The WebExec wizard will also provide a customization feature to group software servers. WebExec will display this collection of software servers you have chosen to administer on your browser. The custom grouping feature can be used to create a summary grouping page of individual software servers on individual machines. For example, you might want to group all software servers for a given department. The wizard will build the HTML for your grouping page and save it with a name you specified. You can then point your browser to the HTML file. For example, for a group named DEPT60.html, set your browser URL to: http://davidd.raleigh.ibm.com:5555/DEPT60.html.
The WebExec wizard may be run at any time to make additional customization changes. Your browser will need to be restarted for the changes to take effect. You may need to also restart the WebExec gateway server application.
To operate WebExec, the gateway server application needs to be executed on the server machine that is to be administered. This can be executed either interactively or as a background daemon.
If you have started the WebExec gateway server application interactively, you will get a WebExec server window that will display the requests made from the WebExec client applet.
You are now ready to access the WebExec client applet through your browser. Point your browser's URL to the specific fully qualified host machine followed by :XXXX/. XXXX is the port number with which you started your WebExec gateway server application. For example, the URL is : http://davidd.raleigh.ibm.com:5555/. If you created a high level grouping page through the wizard, you may point your browser to its URL. For example, http://davidd.raleigh.ibm.com :5555/DEPT60.html.
You will be presented with an index HTML page that identifies the software servers you have identified that are to be administered on this machine. You will see an indication on whether the respective software server is running or not. Moving your cursor over the status indicator light will display the status in text form. To administer a software server merely click on the appropriate Administer button.
After selecting a particular software server to administer, your browser window will contain a link to the on-line WebExec reference material as well as buttons to either Hide Remote or Show Remote. These functions will operate on the free floating remote control which is automatically launched for you. This remote control contains operations that you can perform on the software servers based on your selections in the install wizard.
Optional security is available in WebExec to restrict access to the WebExec functions. During the installation, the WebExec install wizard will make the security option available. You may specify a userid and password that will be required to be entered prior to the activation of the remote control interface.
Follow the instructions below to uninstall WebExec:

The remote control interface element provides execution and access to administrative operations of the individual IBM Software Servers. It has been designed to be a free standing window that can "float" independently of the main browser window. This allows you the flexibility to use any of the WebExec product functions while administering your IBM Software Server.
If during installation you have indicated that you would like to secure the WebExec software, you will be presented with a logon dialog. You will need to enter the userid and password specified at install time to activate the remote control. The remote control provides visual status indicating the state of your software on the specific server being administered.
The remotes have a built-in refresh capability that will have them re-sync with the software server state.
Each remote has File and Help pull down menus. The file menu of the remote contains WebExec Audit Trail and WebExec Ticker choices. The audit trail represents a log of requests that have been made to the WebExec gateway server application. This can be used to identify what administrative functions have been performed and by whom. The WebExec ticker will display a window with informational text. This text is tailorable. The text is set in the WebExec wizard using the customization feature.
The remote control will display the results of its operations in either the browser window or in a WebExec console window. The console window is primarily used for displaying text and comes with a toolbar that allows for adjustment of the fonts and provides a text search function. In addition, users can go back and forth through the console window and view cumlative results that have been displayed, without having to rerun the operations from the remote. The individual administration remote controls are illustrated and described as follows:
The name of the server machine that is being administered is identified on the WebExec remote control.
The state of the software server is reflected on the remote control. This is either started or stopped and contains a corresponding green or red indicator. The indicator will turn yellow while waiting to resolve the state of the software server. The indicator is an active link; clicking it will give the current state of your software server. The state indicates whether the Database Manager is running.
Start starts the Database Manager and updates the state on the remote control. Likewise, Stop stops the Database Manager and updates the state on the remote control.
Configuration displays the current configuration information for the Database Manager.
Statistics presents a current snapshot of the activity of the Database Manager. Diagnostics presents the contents of the DB2diag file; and Properties presents a dialog containing relevant DB2 properties you have identified. Currently this is the DB2diag file directory. You will need to update this if you have changed this directory.
Information presents a link to the on-line WebExec reference material. Software Servers returns to the index of software servers to be administered. The message text area is at the bottom of the remote and contains informational messages. Any user-defined functions that were added via the wizard will also appear. If the user has chosen to disable any of the provided administrative functions, the buttons will be grayed out.
Note to all users:
These functions are for administering single instances of the IBM DB2 DataBase Manager.
Note to OS/2 users:
Local logon to DB2 is required and provided through WebExec prior to
activation of the DB2 OS/2 remote control.
Note to NT users:
The start/stop operations are for DB2 as a service only.
