"Transport in bypass transition: mapping active time scales
using wavelet techniques"

ABSTRACT
We use wavelet methods to map the evolution of turbulent scales
in a boundary layer undergoing bypass transition. For these
intermittent flows characterized by the interplay of freestream
turbulence and rapidly evolving turbulent spots, wavelets
are preferable to Fourier techniques. We calculate ensemble-
and spot-conditioned time scales based on two different
criteria: maximum of spectral energy content, and maximum of
spectral Reynolds stress content. Differences between the
two methods are highlighted.
